Recently, a small group of PDC coalition members attended a national Advancing Excellence Conference in Dallas, TX. At this conference we were reminded of how consistently assigning staff was TRULY the bedrock of beginning a culture change journey in an organization. Changing the way we care is about providing the best environment for our customers (residents/families) and our staff. Have those of you who have made the shift to consistently assigning staff noticed a difference in your resident AND staff satisfaction and outcomes?

As part of our ongoing plan, we implemented consistent assisgnment across all of our elder care/dementia services...one comment we keep hearing from staff is that it has raised accountability amongst caregivers. Most of our staff indicate it is a more realistic way to provide care. Before consistent assignment, responsible CNA's felt like they had to care for 30+ residents on their living area. Now they have 7 individuals they care for and work with a partner who also has 7. They feel like they have more time to care for those individuals without feeling responsible for everyone who lives in their area. Now we are tweaking other systems such as how resident moves are made, how we decide who to admit to a particular bed, etc. It means a different way of doing business so all have to be involved in the planning and ongoing discussions.

As a Consumer I would like to emphasis the importance of the role Consistent Assignment plays in the quality of care the residents receive. The CNA's I have heard speak about working with Consistent Assignment I felt they were happier once they had the schedules set and working in their facility. Remember Happy Caregivers make for Happy Families.
